Here's pics of all of my current pre production stuff posted a few of these on this site before but i'll update this thread as i get new stuff.

Painted sample potf2 bobafett marked with a 1 on his leg. Some minor differnced I can see with the biggest being the unpainted saw on his leg and no silver marks on his knee. Other areas seem to be a slightly different shade of paint than the production version.

Also to add to my small but now growing ctc 2 collection is a test shot prototype chip

My 2 prototype commtech 2 chips with a production chewbacca

T
his first one I found at a local walmart during the ep2 midnight madness. I noticed the insert variants for each figure right off the bat but I was puzzled when I found this R2 with a totally unique insert not found with any other figure. Its a white/ off-white color with black/dark grey dots on it and lines connecting the dots. The millipedes are also i'm guessing hand painted with red stripes down them like the ones pictured on the cardback. There are no inserts at the bottom of the bubble and no try me sticker on the bubble. To top it off it is on a super battledroid cardback

sorry for all the pics

Hi Anthony,

The Fett is a nice pickup. Some FEP's (paint samples) are difficult to track down. It's cool to see another collector interested in the unproduced CTC2 chips. I know you were asking about information regarding them on SSU. I posted a response on RS a couple of years ago, regarding availability of the chips so here's a copy / paste with some minor changes.

The Chewbacca chip is by far the easiest of the unproduced COMMtech chips to find currently, due to the Chewbacca Dejarik figure coming so close to being released with the CTC2 chip. When Mac Lee first offered them for sale, he informed me he had 500 of them. I picked up about six if I remember correctly and help a couple of collectors pick up an example. There's alot of them!

The next six are also relatively easy to track down. Those six chips are Sabe, Battledroid Security, Mas Amedda, Tuskin Raider, Coruscant Guard, and Jek Porkins. Three of these can be found with the photo inserts (Mas Amedda, Tuskin Raider, and Coruscant Guard), but it's easier finding them without the photo inserts for sale. The Jek with insert does exist as you can tell from Brandon's carded example.

Then a wave of nine is the middle of the road as far as being difficult to obtain of the chips currently known. Those nine being Gungan Warrior, Nute Gunray (Hologram), Jar Jar Binks, Anakin Skywalker (Mechanic), Shmi Skywalker, Sebulba, Fode and Bede, Darth Maul (Break Apart), and Classic Obi - Wan.

After these 16 is where the bottleneck begins to take place, as far as obtaining the chips goes. I currently have 13 of the chips all with their photo inserts. I've passed on the easy six, as I am looking to complete a set with all the chips having their correct photo inserts. In addition to the Chewie and the nine middle of the road chips, I also have the R2-D2 (Battle Damaged), Obi - Wan Kenobi (Jedi Cloak), and the Boss Nass. Then it's a rather difficult task as there are several currently known one offs floating around. In addition to the 13 with photo inserts I also have a Qui - Gon Jinn (Jedi Master) as well as a Naboo Royal Security chip, if I remember. I'd have to dig through the stuff.

The group of nine chips were offered by Jordan and Hollywood Heroes in 2002 if memory serves me correctly. I also obtained the three other chips through Jordan as well. Almost all of the yellow first shot chips on the market came from a source I used to deal with several years ago, and I had about 17 first shot shells at one point. The first shots are somewhat difficult to find, but they are out there for sale every once in a while, from other sources. Since you picked one up, the previous statement was just an fyi. 8>) I also own an orange mold injected shell first shot.

Carded examples aren't really too difficult to track down if one knows where to look, but the prices are too high almost every time. I've passed on carded examples for this reason alone. The easiest carded examples to obtain are the Chewie, Coruscant Guard, Mas Amedda, and Tuskin Raider. I've seen the tougher R2, OB1, and Anakin for sale from time to time. I do own a Mas Amedda on the card, just so I have an example.

I also own a functional unproduced reader, and concept stand. I currently know of a couple of collectors who have more chips than me (due to me wanting a set with the inserts), but I'm not in competition with anyone. As my interests shift so do my collecting habits.

You can see images of most of my stuff in the article I co wrote about four years ago with my friend Innis. It's located in our features section but you can check it out by going here: http://www.behindthetoys.com/features/chipguide.asp

The chips are loved by some, and hated by most, but a challenge to put together as a set. Good luck with your quest!

Hey Robert,

Thanks for the info and a better idea of the rarity of some of these. I really dont have a focus for my stuff right now but I would have to say this ctc2 stuff REALLY interests me and I might switch my proto collecting more towards trying to locate a set of these. If these commtech v2 chips would have ever seen the light of day at retail they definately would have been my favorite packin. I cant stand those force files they decided to put in instead. I hope to add at least one of the ctc2 figures carded to my collection. It will probably be a chewbacca or one of the other 3 easier ones to find that you mentioned. I've seen several of these for sale since i've been looking but dont think i've ever seen any of the others. That guide you wrote along with fbody's page he posted are great resources of info about these and I'd like to thank you for putting them together.

Thanks again for the info and for the kind words on the fett. Is he one of the harder ones to find that you spoke of? I've not been looking into protos for long but in the time I have i've never seen one of him and had a hard time choosing between getting him and a non production color darth maul potj split in half figure. I just couldnt pass on the fett.

Nice collection you have there. The CTC focus sounds like a good one.

Is that C-3PO dated/copyrighted at all ?

Also that Motti looks very unusual.

Thanks, the 3p0 does have copyrights and dates. I think the motti was probably a result of purging the molds. What do you guys think? I've got some more coming on the way to me i'll post up when they all arrive.

Thanks bro!!

Here are some "new" mockups to share with you guys. Talk about dumpster dive finds these are probably the most beat up mockups i've ever seen.

First is a Zutton figure mocked up to a queen amidala POTJ cardback, the cardback lacks a datestamp and the figure has no copyright/date info or even pegholes

This next one is in even worse condition but still equally cool. Its a Saga palpatine figure mocked up on a boba fett cardback with boba insert. This cardback also lacks a datestamp.

Got some more unpainted protos as well recently Shaak Ti with no copyright info and Luminara

The Wedge is a great proto. Do you know why the X was burned into the chest? I have seen other protos with that mark and never have heard why it's there.

Thanks, I've got no Idea why the x is burned into him other than thinking it has something to do with getting rid of it or not using that particular one for something. I too have seen others with an x or + burned into them, they were on droid protos from the ep1 era

I'll just copy and paste the information I know about the "X" tracking mark as it's easier than retyping it from a past thread I responded to.

The "X" tracking mark is done utilizing a Philips head screwdriver. One employee I was dealing with informed me that it's how Hasbro was tracking stolen prototypes and the marking would indicate where the prototype came from i.e. Cincy, Pawtucket, Hong Kong etc. The employee stated that once Hasbro saw the marking of the prototype they could then try and plug the leak of where the prototypes were getting stolen from. Another prominent collector that I've spoken to heard the explanation that the mark was done to indicate which area ordered the test example, i.e. Cincy, Pawtucket, Hong Kong etc. Basically, the same explanation in such the mark indicates which site the prototype figure is for / from. One can also speculate that the "X" branding mark was done to destroy the value of the prototype.

I am hesitant to post what "HFE" stands for, as I did not want individuals looking to create a fake prototype going pen happy, but "HFE" stands for "Hong Kong Far East". These three letters are written on the figures arms, legs, chest, and head.

Here's another example.
